Nigeria chances of making World Cup hang by the thread after another 1-1 draw with South Africa

NIGERIA'S chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup are now hanging by a thread after the Super Eagles could only manage a 1-1 draw with South Africa's Bafana Bafana in Uyo tonight giving them a pathetic three points from a possible nine.

In what has been a woeful World Cup campaign, Nigeria has failed to win any of her opening three matches, despite the fact that two of them have been at home. In her opening two games, Nigeria drew 1-1 with Lesotho at home and by the same scoreline away to Zimbabwe, leaving the Eagles in fifth place in the group of six.

South Africa took the lead in the 29th minute through Themba Zwane who dazzled past the Nigerian defence to send the ball beyond the reach of Stanley Nwabali in goal for the Super Eagles. However, upon resumption in the 46th minute, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru got Nigeria back into the game with an exquisite solo effort from outside the box.

After drawing level, however, Nigeria could not take the lead as a series of chances to snatch a win could not be converted, thanks to but the crossbar and the impressive Ronwen Williams in goal for South Africa. Nigeria will now play Benin Republic on Monday and if they fail to win can say goodbye to the World Cup hopes.
