Evans reveals that prominent businessmen across the southeast provided him with information

NOTORIOUS kidnapper Chukwudumeje Onwuamadike popularly known as Evans has revealed that prominent businessmen across southeastern Nigeria regularly provided him with information on victims and shared the proceeds of the ransoms he received.

Earlier this month, Evans, 36, was arrested by the police in his palatial mansion in the Magodo area of Lagos, bringing to an end years of pursuit. Evans, who dropped out of school in Junior Secondary School Two and confessed to have once collected a $1m ransom fee, was Nigeria's most notorious kidnapper, who masterminded the abduction of public officials, expatriates and rich businessmen and women.

Under interrogation, Evans, who is originally from Nnewi in Anambra State, confessed that he worked with and colluded with prominent businessmen across the southeast.  It is believed that he has now given a lot of names of these businessmen to the police, most of whom are being tracked.

Evans also disclosed that some of his accomplices were based in Europe, which explained his craze to collect ransoms in foreign currencies. According to a source, Evans explained that he usually shared the loot with his informants on a 60% to 40% basis and even threatened to make a public announcement should the police fail to arrest those he mentioned.

One police source said: “It is true, he has mentioned some very prominent businessmen from the southeast as those who provided information on people he kidnapped. He claimed that they shared from the ransoms he collected.

“Evans claimed that most of his accomplices were based in Europe and that they were into drug business and the information he provided is being investigated.  We have to be sure there is a connection between Evans and those mentioned and once that is established, they would all be arrested."
