NPF says Dino Melaye is in a stable condition after transferring him to Police Hospital in Abuja

NIGERIAN Police Force (NPF) senior commanders have revealed that Senator Dino Melaye is in a stable condition in after being admitted into the Police Hospital in Abuja yesterday following his arrest.

Representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Melaye had been declared wanted after he refused to submit himself to the police to answer questions relating to a culpable homicide. Police had wanted to question him regarding an incident on July 19, 2018, when armed thugs said to be employed by him shot and wounded one Sergeant Danjuma Saliu during a stop-and- search operation along the Aiyetoro-Gbede-Mopa Road in Kogi State.

Despite repeated requests for the senator to report to the police station, he refused to, prompting the NPF to surround his Abuja mansion, refusing to leave until he surrendered. Yesterday, after an eight day siege, which involved the cutting of power and water to the building, Senator Melaye finally surrendered himself to the police.

However, Senator Melaye slumped upon emerging from his mansion and had to be carried into the waiting police vehicle. Upon arrival at police headquarters, he slumped again and had to be transferred to the Police Hospital, where is he receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

NPF spokesman Jimoh Moshood, said: “Senator Dino Melaye is currently in police custody for investigation. He has been taken to Police Hospital, Abuja for medical attention and he is in stable condition.

“Investigation into the case of criminal conspiracy and attempted culpable homicide against him is on-going. The case will be taken to court on completion of investigation."

Apparently, Sergeant Saliu is yet to recover from the gunshot injury he sustained during the attack and still under intensive medical care in the hospital. A warrant of arrest was obtained after Senator Melaye refused to honour a police invitation dated  July 23, 2018 signed by the Kogi State police commissioner inviting him to report on July 26 at 11am at the Kogi State Police Command Lokoja.
