Ajimobi totally humiliated in Oyo State as PDP clinch 26 of 32 state house of assembly seats

OYO State has witnessed a dramatic turnaround in the composition of its state house of assembly after last weekend's elections as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has gone from having just one member to now becoming the largest body in the chamber with 26 members.

In what was a crushing defeat for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP not only won the Oyo State governorship elections but also swept the state house of assembly seats. In the outgoing house, the PDP only has one seat in the 32-man assembly but now it controls 26, compared with the APC's five and the lone seat for the Accord Party.

Cruising to victory in all the elections that took place in Oyo State, the PDP won the presidential polls and in the gubernatorial contest, Seyi Makinde, the party's flagbearer, beat  Bayo Adelabu of the APC. With a majority in the Oyo State House of Assembly, the PDP will now produce its principal officers including the speaker, deputy speaker, chief whip, majority leader and the chairpersons of its main committees.

Considered a crushing blow for incumbent Governor Abiola Ajimobi, the takeover of the Oyo State by the PDP is linked to his performance in officer over the last eight years. Governor Ajimobi offended a lot of voters with his failure to finished infrastructural projects, his decision to appoint 10 monarchs in Ibadan, the brash way in which he talks to people, his mishandling of the closure of the Ladoke Akintola University of Science and Technology and his insistence that people stand up to recognise him whenever he enters a venue.

To complete the humiliation for Governor Ajimobi, he also lost his bid to get elected as the senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District. He was defeated by Dr Kola Balogun of the PDP who secured 105,720 votes to Governor Ajimobi's 92,218 votes.

Governor-elect Makinde will now have the benefit of having a loyal house of assembly, of which most of them are new, which should make for smooth governance. Of the 32 members, 29 of them are freshmen, with only three being returning lawmakers.
