Another building collapses trapping at least 23 people in the Oyo State capital Ibadan

ABOUT 23 people including workers and vendors are feared trapped in an uncompleted building in the Oyo State capital Ibadan after a three-storey site on which they were working collapsed in the Bode area of the city.

At around 5.30pm yesterday evening, the building gave way and eyewitnesses said no fewer than 23 workers and two food vendors were trapped inside it. This latest accident comes just two days after a four storey building collapsed on Lagos Island killing dozens of people including several primary school children.

Shina Olukolu, the Oyo State police commissioner, said last night that about six people had been rescued so far and efforts and ongoing to rescue everyone else. He added that excavators were being expected to help dig into the rubble and the police were working with the State Emergency Management Agency)and other stakeholders to save as many people as possible.

One eyewitness said: "Some of the survivors of the incident who have been rescued told us there are no fewer than 23 workers on site and two traders. One survivor said one of the traders was trapped with her baby."

Unlike the situation in Lagos Island where the building that collapsed was in use, in Ibadan, the structure was uncompleted. In the Lagos accident, the building also housed a primary school despite having been earmarked for demolition about two years ago.
