European Union bars Medview from flying into its airspace over poor state of its aircraft

NIGERIAN carrier Medview Airline has been barred from entering European airspace after aviation officials decided that its Boeing 767 aircraft that flies into Gatwick Airport in the UK is not airworthy.

In November 2015, Medview began flying the Lagos-London route, becoming the only Nigerian carrier into Gatwick Airport. Yesterday, the European Commission told the airline to change the aircraft or suspend flight operations to its airspace until it is able to provide another aircraft for its operations.

Apart from Medview, 180 other airlines were also barred from flying into the Europe Union, with it being one of seven barred over safety conditions. Medview commenced three weekly flights to London with a Boeing 767 aircraft but later changed to a 747 last year when the original plane went for maintenance.

However, when the aircraft returned from checks, Medview's management redeployed it and switched to a Boeing 747 for the Lagos-London flight. Also, due to a recent lack of passengers, the airline reduced its flight frequency to twice a week.
