Governor Makinde makes his Cathedral of St Peter the official church of worship in Oyo State

OYO State's Governor Seyi Makinde has revealed that his church the Cathedral of St Peter in the Aremo area of the capital Ibadan will from henceforth become the official place of worship for all government activities.

Last week, Governor Makinde was sworn-in and over the weekend, attended his first Sunday as the chief executive of Oyo State. During the service, he said it was the prayers of the churches and those who wanted him as the governor that were answered, hence why he won the gubernatorial election.

Governor Makinde said: "Now that your prayers have been answered, I’m here and ready to serve the people. I implore the church to keep on praying for my administration to succeed.”

During the service, the provost of the Church, Reverend Andrew Adebiyi, urged the governor not to allow the pressure of office work to take away humility, kindness and his other good leadership qualities from him. In his sermon titled God’s Gift to the Church, the provost said the creator gave gifts to his children for the spiritual growth of the church.

He charged the congregation to use their respective God’s gift for the development and spiritual growth of mankind. Dignitaries at the thanksgiving service included deputy governor Alhaji Rauf Olaniyan, head of service Mrs Ololade Agboola and the former prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria Most Reverend Sunday Ola-Makinde.

Since assuming office, Governor Makinde has made several controversial  moves, including saying that he will not pay the N30,000 minimum wage and seeking to dissolve all local government councils. His latest move to make his church the official place of worship in the state is likely to attract widespread criticism too.
