Boko Haram offshoot Islamic State of West Africa Province kills Nigerian Army commander Lt Col Azubuike

BOKO Haram offshoot the Islamic State of West Africa Province (Iswap) has killed Lt Col Chike Azubuike the commander of the 158 Battalion of the Nigerian Army during a recent raid on a military base in Borno State.

In a daring raid on the military facility at Kareto Village in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State, Iswap shot the commanding officer and several of his troops. For three days now, Iswap has laid siege to parts of Borno State, killing scores of soldiers who they took by surprise.

One military source said: “On June 12 Boko Haram/Iswap elements attacked troops of 158 Battalion located at Kareto Village in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State. The attack was not repelled and troops at the location were dislodged.”

He said further details were being expected from the military authorities in the area but it appears that the terrorists relocated to Fuchimiram village, about six kilometres west of Kareto. According to the source, there was a need for air strikes against Fuchimiram and other locations around Kareto to flush out the terrorists.

Over recent weeks, the Lake Chad axis had been under attack, as within the last week, terrorists had attacked troops at Gashigar and Kareto, both in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State. Army chiefs have been told to put all units in the axis covering Damasak, Mallam Fatori, Magumeri, Gubio on high alert, as Boko Haram usually launch attacks during the rainy season.
