Buhari submits list of 43 ministerial nominees that includes several key loyalists like Keyamo and Akpabio

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has submitted a list of 43 ministerial nominees that includes several of his key loyalists such as Festus Keyamo and Godswill Akpabio to the National Assembly for screening and approval.

Since being sworn-in on May 29, President Buhari has kept the nation waiting with his list of ministerial nominees as it had been expected that he would send the names to the senate for verification immediately he assumed office for his second tenure. Yesterday the senate told President Buhari that he has to submit the list by Friday to enable senators complete the screening of candidates before they go on their summer recess.

On July 26, the senate will embark on a break until September 26, so its leaders had warned the president that if they do not get his list of nominees this week, the whole process will have to be put on hold until October. Today, the waiting game ended as the president forwarded his list of nominees that included Mr Keyamo, Senator Akpabio and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola.

Also, on the list are Sunday Dare, the executive commissioner at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Sharon Ikeazor, a former lawmaker, Tayo Alasoadura, a former federal lawmaker and Olorunnibe Mamora, former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Several senior figures from President Buhari’s first term are also returning, including Zainab Ahmed, Babatunde Fashola, Geoffrey Onyeama, Ogbonnaya Onu, Rotimi Amaechi, Chris Ngige and Lai Mohammed.

Among the ministers not returning are former minister of state for petroleum Ibe Kachikwu, ex-sports minister Solomon Dalung, former defence minister Mansur Dan Ali and the minister of internal affairs Abdulrahman Dambazau. Also dropped are minister of budgetary affairs Udoma Udo Udoma, agriculture minister Audu Ogbeh and communications minister Adebayo Shittu.

Nigeria's constitution requires that each of her 36 states produces at least one minister, although that individual does not necessarily have to be in the cabinet. It is expected that the senators will now screen the nominees over the next two weeks and though that scale through will be assigned portfolios.
