Former presidential candidate and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore arrested

FORMER presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore had been arrested by men of the Department of State Security (DSS) in Lagos ahead of a protest he plans to organise on August 5 against the government.

Sowore, 47, who ran for president in Nigeria's last election as the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), had planned a series of nationwide protests on Monday under the slogan #RevolutionNow. His campaign was to protest against bad governance and the failure of the current administration to address issues such as insecurity, rising unemployment, poor power supply and growing corruption.

This morning, however, Sowore was picked up by men of the DSS from his Lagos apartment and whisked away to an unknown location. Before his phone was seized from him, however, Sowore managed to send out a tweet at around 1.25 am, saying that he had been arrested by the DSS.

So far, the DSS is yet to confirm the arrest. It is believed that Sowore was picked up not to only forestall his protests but also because the government is wary of his recent parley with Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu.
