Chelsea's Fikayo Tomori open to idea of switching to Nigeria as Omeruo signs four year deal with Leganes

CHELSEA defender Fikayo Tomori has indicated that he may switch his allegiance to Nigeria and make himself available for selection into the Super Eagles despite having played for the England youth team.

Tomori, 21, is an up and coming centreback who has caught the eye in recent seasons after he won the U20 World Youth Championship with England two years ago. However Eagles manager Gernot Rohr is keen on getting hold of the player and has asked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to sound out the player.

Formal talks have yet to take place by NFF officials have sounded out his representatives and they are not averse to the prospect of the player featuring for Nigeria. Under Fifa rules, a player needs to go through a formal switch if he intends to feature for one country having played for the youth team of another.

Back at Chelsea after a productive loan spell with English Championship side Derby County, Tomori is believed to have a better chance of playing international football with Nigeria than with England. Already, RB Leipzig striker Ademola Lookman, who is in a similar position, has indicated that he may also switch from England to Nigeria.

Lookman, who came to the fore with Everton in the English Premier league, is now convinced that his international future lies with Nigeria. He is expected to ask the NFF to begin the process of his international switch ‎when he is fully settled in his new surrounding in Germany.

Meanwhile, another Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo will be putting pen to paper on a four year deal with Spanish side Leganes after the La Liga club to sign him permanently for a fee close to £5m. Omeruo spent last season on loan to Leganes with the club given the option to sign him permanently after the end of his loan spell for a fee rumoured to be around £6m.

The time attached to paying the agreed fee for his signing lapsed without the Leganes triggering the option but the Spaniards have maintained negotiations with Chelsea and a deal thought to be around £5m has been agreed between both clubs. Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf put in a bid to sign Omeruo but the player's preference to stay in Spain played into the hands of Leganes who are keen on keeping him.

Omeruo is expected to have his medicals within this week before he will be unveiled to bring about an end to his contract with Chelsea. Back in 2013, Chelsea signed Omeruo but he did not play a single minute of first team football for the club as he has been repeatedly loaned out.
