Senator Olujimi sworn-in becoming the eighth female senator in the National Assembly

SENATOR Abiodun Olujimi has been sworn-in by senate president Ahmad Lawan as the member representing Ekiti South Senatorial District after she recently won a court case that declared her the winner of the February elections.

Between 2015 and 2019, Senator Olujimi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is a former deputy governor, represented the senatorial district in the National Assembly. However, at the last elections in February this year, Dayo Adeyeye of All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner of the head-to-head between the two of them.

Subsequently, Senator Olujimi took the matter to the elections tribunal which declared her the winner and last week, the Federal Court of Appeal, sitting in Kaduna upheld that judgement. With her victory, Senator Olujimi has returned to the senate, where she is one of the most senior PDP lawmakers.

Having been issued with a certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec), Senator Olujimi was today administered the oath of office by Senator Lawan, the senate president today. Congratulating her, Senator Lawan said that with her coming back, the senate now has eight very solid female senators.

With the swearing-in of Senator Olujimi, the number of APC senators now stands at 63 while the PDP has 45 Senators. Other female senators in the present senate are Oluremi Tinubu, APC, Lagos Central; Stella Oduah, PDP, Anambra North; Uche Ekwunife, PDP, Anambra Central; Rose Oko, PDP, Cross River North;  Betty Apiafi, PDP, Rivers; Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed, APC, Adamawa Central and Akon Eyakenyi, PDP, Akwa Ibom East.

In the Eighth senate that lasted between 2015 and 2019, Senator Olujimi was the deputy minority whip and later became the senate minority leader. She was the only female among the principal officers of the immediate past senate.
