Amokachi joins list of sports stars handing out palliatives as his foundation hands out food in Kaduna

FORMER Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi has joined the growing list of sports stars providing the Nigerian public with Covid-19 palliatives after he distributed food items to 1,100 families in Kaduna.

Amokachi, 47, who is currently one of Nigeria's football ambassadors, grew up in Kaduna where he began his professional career with local club Ranchers Bees. With the Kaduna State government having extended the lockdown for a further fortnight, Amokachi decided to wade in by getting his Amokachi Foundation to hand out food items and other provisions to the members of the public in the economically-paralysed city.

“This is my little contribution to help the needy in this Covid-19 period. I normally do this between four and five times in a year to assist people who are in need.

“I consider it a special honour and privilege by God to assist the less-privileged in our society. I will continue to do this as long as God grants me the grace,” Amokachi added.

Popularly known as The Bull, Amokachi added that the gesture was extended to both male and females but mostly to women since mothers are responsible for the catering of the family. Apparently, the distribution was carried out in the Kaduna metropolis in an orderly manner, with the beneficiaries thanking Amokachi for the gesture, declaring it as timely and special.

Amokachi has cult a followership in Kaduna where he was born and grew up before blossoming into stardom with the Super Eagles, playing in two World Cups in 1994 and 1998. He was also an influential member of Nigeria’s gold winning Atlanta 1996 Olympics team.

Since retiring from playing, Amokachi has coached local club Nassarawa United, the national U-23 team as well as served as the assistant Super Eagles coach under the Late Stephen Keshi. Between 2016 and 2017, Amokachi, who had a high profile European career playing for Brugge, Everton and Besiktas, also coached Finnish clubside JS Hercules.
