Former president Jonathan named Africa Peace and Security Leader of the Year 2020

FORMER president Dr Goodluck Jonathan, has been named as the African Leadership Magazine's Africa Peace and Security Leader of the Year 2020 in recognition of his sterling work across the continent.

 

Dr Jonathan who left office in 2015 after losing an election to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, received widespread praise for conceding defeat and leaving office without any rancour. it was the first time that an incumbent president had been defeated in a Nigerian election and it happened without any trauma because of Dr Jonathan's statesmanship.

 

Since leaving office, Dr Jonathan has been involved in working for peace across Africa and resolving political disputes in trouble spots. Last year, he headed an economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) peace mission to Mali following a military coup there and got the military junta to agree to a transition programme.

 

Dr Ken Giami , the publisher of African Leadership Magazine, announced the award at the company's UK head office, stating that Dr. Jonathan was overwhelmingly chosen by poll respondents because of his commitment to deepening democracy, peace and security across the continent. He added that the former president emerged the winner after scoring over 80% of the total votes cast in the category.

 

Other distinguished Africans who were honoured in the awards include World Health Organisation director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who was named African of the Year 2020; President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, who was named African Political Leader of the Year; Mo Ibrahim, the African Philanthropist of the year 2020 and Gracia Machel, who was named African Climate Champion of the Year 2020. African Leadership Magazine's poll attracted over 120,000 votes.

 

Winners shall be decorated and presented with honour instruments on February 26 during the annual African Leadership Magazine Persons of the Year Award ceremony. This year, the event is billed to hold virtually and set to host influential Africans in business, politics and all spheres of African leadership spectrum.
