Nigeria's insecurity situation set to get worse as Niger Delta militants threaten to resume bombing

NIGERIA'S chronic insecurity problems look set to get significantly worse after militants in the Niger Delta threatened to join the fray by destroying all federal government property in Lagos and Abuja over the marginalisation of the region.

Over recent years, Nigeria has been plagued by security concerns as the country is reeling from the effects of a Boko Haram insurgency, marauding Fulani herdsmen, widespread kidnapping, a rise in armed robbery and other forms of violent crime like rape. Of late, the traditionally restive Niger Delta has been quiet but with the government ignoring their plight, the youths there have threatened to resume their militant campaign.

Yesterday, a spokesman for the Supreme Egbesu Liberation Fighters, posted a video on Africa Independent Television's Twitter handle, saying it was ready was take up arms again. In the message, the militant group said this became necessary because they have not seen the benefits of the federal government's amnesty programme.

“After accepting the amnesty pact, till date, there are no schools, no potable water, no light, no hospital and access roads for our people to enjoy.  The military that ought to protect properties has turned themselves into militaries of killing, raping and maiming innocent individuals and rending our youths jobless.

“So many others have decided to treat us in same manner but don’t worry because we are coming to destroy all your infrastructures in Abuja and Lagos. Even to the oil companies operating in our region that have decided to undermine our people, be rest assured that your days would soon catch up with you.

“Due to the insensitive nature of the Nigerian government on issues that are bothering its citizens, today the country is in turmoil. There are protest everywhere and strikes in several sectors and the EndSARS protest that took place almost crippled the nation’s economy.

“Nigeria's government ought to give her citizens good governance. Today, the various zones in the country are calling for division of the country called Nigeria, so as a group determined to give total liberation of her people, we will destroy all the oil facilities both onshore and offshore in no distant time and we will be seen to be crippling the Nigerian economy in no distant time as well," he added.
