Sunday Igboho's lawyer says Nigeria is yet to make a formal extradition request to Benin Republic

NIGERIA is yet to file a formal extradition request to the Republic of Benin over Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo according to his lawyer Ibrahim Salami who said the Beninoise authorities were only asked to arrest him.

On July 1, men of the Nigerian Department of State Security (DSS) raided Mr Adeyemo's Ibadan home, killing two of his aides and arresting 13 others. Although Mr Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho managed to escape, he home was turned inside out with the DSS seizing items including his international passport, claiming he was stockpiling weapons.

Subsequently, Mr Igboho fled to the Republic of Benin and was arrested at Cotonou airport while trying to board a plane to Germany. He has been arraigned in court where he is expected to be charged with an immigration offence and the Nigerian government has been asked to file its case against Mt Igboho.

According to Mr Salami, the Nigerian government was yet to request Mr Igboho's repatriation from Benin Republic. He added that the Nigerian government only requested for Mr Igboho’s arrest over some offences he allegedly committed  and not his extradition.

Mr Salami said: “When we saw the case in court, we discovered that the Nigerian government has not requested for his extradition. What is there is that the Nigerian government said they wanted to arrest Igboho because he committed certain offences in Nigeria and that if he is seen in Benin Republic he should be arrested.”
