Governor Obiano proffers reasons as to why Ndigbo do not do well in national politics

ANAMBRA State governor Willie Obiano has said that Ndigbo do not do well in national politics because the people of the southeast geo-political zone prefer splitting themselves into smaller political parties instead of coming together in a larger one.

Governor Obiano said Igbos, who own over 70% of the Nigerian economy are capable of leading the country but must come together and form a formidable entity. No Igbo man has ever led Nigeria since 1966 when former army leader General Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi was head of state briefly for six months.

“If we Igbos divide ourselves into small parts, they can never make a whole and that was why we have never done well in the Nigerian politics as Igbo, yet the Igbo today own over 70% of the Nigerian economy, whether anybody likes it or not, that is the truth. However, most of these Igbo wealth are domiciled outside the southeast and the southeast remains backward in terms of infrastructure and self-sufficiency in food production, which are the things that Anambra State is trying to actualise.

“I am now currently the leader of my party the All Progressives Grand Alliance (Apga) and have stepped into his big shoes and am also the board of trustees chairman. If you look at the treatment perceived or otherwise that the Igbo have suffered in the polity called Nigeria, you will agree with me that the only way to march forward is that our sisters and brothers from the same bloc, we need to hold hands together; that is the only way anybody can take us seriously."

He added that an Apga government will really help in the industrialisation of other states across the southeast. Governor Obiano expressed confidence that his party was going to make resounding impact not only in the southeast but also beyond in next year's elections.
