Dino Melaye flees Nigeria warning Saraki and other senators to defend him or face the consequences

BELEAGURED Senator Dino Melaye has apparently fled Nigeria and vowed not to return until there is a new government at the federal level as well as in his home state of Kogi in response to moves to have him recalled from the senate.

Controversial Senator Melaye, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, is facing the prospect of being recalled from the senate after the Court of Appeal in Abuja dismissed an appeal he filed asking that the recall process be truncated with immediate effect. In response, the Kogi State Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) resident electoral commissioner Professor James Apam, said that the commission can commence the recall process.

Already, Inec has fixed the last Saturday of April as the verification date. Inec also fixed the first Saturday of May as the day that a referendum would be conducted in line with the electoral laws.

Exasperated by developments, Senator Melaye is said to have left Nigeria with a stern warning for the senate president Bukola Saraki and the entire upper legislative chamber. He apparently warned them of the consequences of their failure to fight his corner, pointing out that it could bring down at least 30 senators.

Apparently, Senator Melaye called two senior staff of the senate president to tell them to pass on the message that he needs the senate to support him against Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, who is thought to be behind the recall process. Senator Melaye believes that his support for Senator Saraki during the election to the office of senate president is the main reason behind his troubles.

One source said he overheard Senator Melaye warning, during a phone conversation, that should he not get the support of the senate president and the senate, he would go public with how much has been spent to keep Senator Saraki in office. Senator Melaye is said to be working on some senators to ensure that his troubles, to be dressed up as persecution, are raised on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday.

Among other things, Senator Melaye wants the senate to pressure the police to withdraw the charges of robbery slapped on him. He has also rejected the suggestion that he should appear in the Senate.

Today, some senators met at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja to discuss the threat issued by Senator Melaye should he not get their support. Sources close to the meeting disclosed that his threat is considered by the senators to carry an enormous potential for embarrassing the senate leadership.

This is said to be related to an investigation into the affairs of a telecommunications company through which the leadership and some other senators cut deals. An emergency meeting is already fixed for tonight to discuss how to counter Senator Melaye, who is said to have a lot of information based of his involvement in many dodgy transactions featuring the senate's leaders.
