High court sentences two of Abba Kyari's co-accused to two years in prison for drug offences

ASSISTANT Police Commissioner Abba Kyari has suffered a major setback in his ongoing trial after two of his co-defendants also charged by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) were sentenced to two year in prison today.

On July 31, 2021, Mr Kyari was suspended by the Police Service Commission after the US Federal Bureau of Investigation indicted him for his alleged role in a $1m scam perpetrated by Internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi. Things then got worse for Mr Kyari as On Monday February 14, this year, he was arrested by the NDLEA over his alleged links with an international drug cartel.

According to the NDLEA, Mr Kyari contacted one of its officers in Abuja and struck a deal to secure the release of a total of 25kg seized cocaine, offering a $61,400 bribe to officers who played along until his arrest. Today, the case of two of Mr Kyari's co-defendants was ruled on by Justice Emeka Nwite and the judge sentenced Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne to two years in jail after they pleaded guilty to three charges.

In his ruling, Justice Nwite said their jail terms, which shall run concurrently, would commence from the day the defendants were arrested by the NDLEA. Messrs Umeibe and Ezenwanne are the two alleged drug traffickers arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, who had pleaded guilty to three counts preferred against them by the NDLEA.
