Amusan and Brume arrive at Birmingham athletics village to a rousing welcome from their team mates

WORLD 100 metres hurdles record holder Tobi Amusan and World Athletics Championships long jump silver medallist Ese Brume have arrived at Nigeria's Commonwealth Games camp in Birmingham to a rapturous welcome.

 

Last week, Tobi, blew everyone away, setting two world records within a few hours at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, clinching gold in the process. That same dame, Ese won a silver ion the women's long jump event with a leap of 7.02 metres, enabling Nigeria to leave the tournament with two medals.

 

Yesterday, the Commonwealth Games opened in Birmingham with Nigeria's 94-person team participating in the opening ceremony. Featuring 6,500 athletes from 54 countries and territories, the Commonwealth Games is set to last for 11 days and Nigeria has historically always been in the top 10 of the medals table.

 

Last night, national Javelin record holder Nnamdi Prosper and veteran powerlifter, Oluwafemiayo Folashade were Team Nigeria’s flag bearers during the opening ceremony. While Prosper will be hoping to get to the podium, Folashade will also be gunning for another golden outing for Nigeria.

 

Yesterday, Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume were given a rousing welcome into Team Nigeria’s section of the Athletes Village. Yusuf Ali, the coordinator of Team Nigeria at the games, expressed delight over the arrival of the duo,  saying they were expected to take a little time off to rest.

 

Mr Ali said: “It is a surprise and good team spirit for us to have them this early. That they chose to come here is a demonstration of their readiness to excel at the games and we are happy because this will also motivate others to do well.”

 

Team Nigeria got going in the games this morning with  table tennis players kicking off the tournament. In the women's event, Nigeria beat St Vincent and Grenadines by three sets to nil and in the men's event, Nigeria also beat South Africa by three sets to nil.
