Enugu State Police Command denies there was any rape at Flavour's concert asking victims to come forward

ENUGU State Police Command has denied reports that as many as 20 ladies were raped at a musical concert recently organised by pop star Chinedu Okoli popularly known as Flavour in the state capital.

Over the weekend, Flavour held a concert at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu but as soon as it ended on Saturday evening, news began circulating that 20 ladies were raped at the event. Police spokesman Ebere Amaraizu, said, however, that neither the state command headquarters nor any of its division had received reports from any victim over the alleged rape.

Wondering where the news came from, Mr Amaraizu said mischief could not be ruled out as those behind it must have had the evil intention to cast put terror in the minds of the law abiding members of the public. He added that they also wanted to paint security operatives, the state government and the organisers of the event in a bad light.

Mr Amaraizu said: “There is no reported case anywhere in the Enugu State Police Command. We don’t have any report of an incident arising from that event, so whoever that has any should come forward and we will look at it.

“That event was organised by Flavour as a way of giving back to the society because he grew up here in Enugu. We won’t want a situation where people sit down somewhere and manufacture stories because he who asserts must also prove."

He also asked how those spreading the story arrived at the figure of 20 without even identifying the victims. According to the police, people are just abusing the social media because it appears that someone just tweeted the story and it began to spread.

“You even begin to ask yourself, those people that quoted number of the rape victims as 20, how did they do the counting? Does it mean they were following the rapists around the taking the data? or were the victims assembled at one place and raped?

“People cannot just sit down and say 1,000 persons have been raped whereas there is no evidence to substantiate that. he stated. These are people who are always there to cause panic in the minds of law-abiding residents of the state, to cause terror in the their minds and to rubbish the good work being done by the security agents and the state government," Mr Amaraizu added.

He pointed out that as far the command in concerned, they do not have any reported case of rape arising from that event or after the event. Mr Amaraizu said any person who has any claim to the contrary should come up with it and the police will take it up from there.
