Nigeria to host Commonwealth youth summit later this month after successful London meeting

NIGERIA is to host a Commonwealth youth summit in Abuja later this month between May 9 and 12 after a recent meeting of heads of government in London agreed on the need to step up work on the subject.

 

Currently in London, President Buhari participated in a Commonwealth summit on Friday, which deliberated on the role of the youth moving forward. After the summit, President Buhari and other world leaders attended the coronation of King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey.

 

Following the Commonwealth summit, it was decided to step up work on youth engagement, so Nigeria has been asked to host a gathering on the matter. Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, the permanent secretary in the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, said that Nigeria, the youth division of the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Commonwealth Youth Programme are jointly organising the Commonwealth Youth and Students Summit for African Region.

 

He added that the summit is in line with the Commonwealth declaration of 2023 as the Year of the Youth. Alhaji Abubakar stated that the  theme of the summit is: Co-creating our common future: Leadership in the Digital Age in Africa.

 

Alhaji Abubakar explained that the summit will serve as a platform that primarily targets the youth as the key actors in the development agenda of the African continent and is expected to be declared open by President Muhammadu Buhari. At the London summit, President Buhari was accompanied by accompanied by the secretary to the government of the federation Boss Mustapha, foreign affairs minister Geoffrey Onyeama and the minister of information and culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
