I hope the Nigerian Tourist Board was paying close attention to the way France made sure the Eiffel Tower was at the centre of everything during the Paris Olympics

Ayo Akinfe

[1] We have all witnessed a brilliantly organised Olympics and one thing that struck me about the Paris games was how central the Eiffel Tower was to everything. I noticed that the organisers used the event to push France’s most famous landmark at every opportunity

[2] I for one will be looking out for figures next year but I am certain that the number of tourists the Eiffel Tower attracts in 2025 will be substantially up

Nigeria’s woeful performance at the Paris Olympics proves more than anything else that we need state intervention in our day-to-day operations and relying on private sector investors will not work

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Once again, Nigeria has finished an Olympic Games without a medal. How a nation of 200m people can fail to pick up one gold, silver or bronze medal at an Olympics just beggars belief. That it does not shame us just tells you everything that is wrong with Nigeria

Studying the ongoing Nigerian economic crisis that has led to the cost of essential food items soaring beyond reach, it is clear that rice presents the biggest challenge of all. We need a new policy that looks something like this

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Worldwide, about 80m hectares of irrigated lowland rice provide 75% of global output. In Nigeria, we have a huge wetland in the Niger Delta but are failing to make use of it

[2] Across south and Southeast Asia, rice is grown in bundled fields or paddies, which are surrounded by a small embankment that keeps the water in. This has led to accelerated production across the region. Our Niger Delta is tailor-made for this kind of rice production

As Nigeria lives with the high cost of basic food items, are we aware of the fact that opening the following high speed railway lines and moving freight off our roads will at least halve distribution costs

[5] Makurdi to Lagos

[6] Makurdi to Kano

[7] Abuja to Maiduguri

[8] Port Harcourt to Abuja

[9] Makurdi to Port Harcourt

[10] Abuja to Sokoto

Why is this so? Let me tell you why:

[1] If we move freight off road and on to rail, whatever happens with the petrol subsidy becomes irrelevant

Nigeria is living with hyper-inflation which many attribute to the government’s decision to remove petrol subsidies. However, that removal was designed to save $8bn annually which if well invested would solve all these problems

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Nigeria currently spends $8bn a year out of her paltry $30bn annual budget subsidising petrol marketers. As a nation we simply cannot afford this. One does not need to be genius to know this wasteful spending has to go

[2] Most Nigerians are rightly scared about the inflationary impact the subsidy will have, so I believe these fears can be negated if the cash is used to fund infrastructural development that will improve their lives in other areas
