I would just have loved it if President Tinubu’s bilateral trade pact with Prime Minister Starmer had included a railway agreement that would bring British investment into Nigeria’s network

Ayo Akinfe

[1] I would have loved to see both gentlemen sign an agreement committing both governments to the target of linking all of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas by rail by 2030

[2] The jewel in the crown of this network will be a high speed link connecting Abuja and Lagos, enabling travel between both cities within two hours

I am throwing down a unique challenge to the members of Nigeria’s South South Governor’s Forum. Build a mobile port and rotate its use across your geo-political zone

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Let me start off again by repeating the point that Nigeria is in her current state because of three basic problems - Intellectual laziness, we are not productive enough and our vanity. If all these problems disappeared tomorrow, our GDP would double overnight

Looking at the Apapa port deal President Tinubu signed with Prime Minister Starmer, I am asking myself why not decongest Lagos with an Atlantic coastline plan that looks like this

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Nigeria will build 10 ports along our Atlantic coastline at Badagry, Lekki and Apapa in Lagos State, Ayetoro in Ondo State, Warri in Delta State, Brass in Bayelsa State, Port Harcourt and Onne in Rivers State, Calabar in Cross River State and Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom State

I find it inconceivable that President Tinubu and Prime Minister Starmer can agree a bilateral trade deal in 2026 that does not include a clean energy element that looks like this

Ayo Akinfe

[1] As from January 1 2027, no building in Nigeria will be granted a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) unless it has solar panels installed on its roof. Not having one will attract prosecution with the risk of the property being forfeited to the federal government

As we await the full details of President Tinubu and Prime Minister Starmer’s deal, I hope they agreed on a timber products pact that involves Nigeria supplying the UK with furniture

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Given that 45% of Nigerian timber exports are rosewood, a highly prized wood used for the production of luxurious furniture we need to start tapping into this. For starters, we need to ban the export of raw wood immediately

[2] Using the UK as a major market, I hope they agreed that Nigeria must match Brazil’s production of 11bn kg of timber by 2030
