As we start another year, Nigerians are once more pretending a messiah is going to drop out of the sky and solve their socio-economic woes. We need to make 2025 the year of Nigerian manufacturing if we want to progress

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Here is a pie chart, which offers a breakdown of the Nigerian economy into its component sectors. As you can see, manufacturing only accounts for about 7% of gross domestic product (GDP). This for me is at the root of all our problems

[2] Do you know the global average with regards to manufacturing as a percentage of national GDP is 30%. When we only have about one quarter of that, you can see why we are in trouble

Ayo Akinfe

[1] We keep debating this issue of inadequate electricity supply in Nigeria but always come up short. It is not actually rocket science as our problems can be broken down into two. In the first place, we need about 50,000MW but only generate 7,000MW and to make matters worse, we can only distribute 4,000MW of this. All we have to do is address both issues

If you ask me, there are five things Nigeria needs to focus on in 2025. These are security, electricity, steel, railways and manufacturing

Ayo Akinfe

[1] As an economy, Nigeria’s woes basically stem from the fact that we simply do not manufacture enough and as a result, import too much. This leads to balance of trade and balance of payment deficits. Once we start manufacturing, we will be on the road to recovery

[2] To become a manufacturing nation you need a large pool of workers, crude oil , steel and electricity. The first two we have in abundance, so need to work on the other two vigorously
