As we enter the last quarter of the year, the federal government needs to start working on its 2026 plans. In my opinion, here are Nigeria’s top 10 priorities at the moment

[1] Ending the current insecurity epidemic. There are 6m weapons in the country at the moment and criminals are having a field day. This needs urgent addressing

[2] Putting out all the ethnic fires currently raging across the country. Ethnic mistrust is now such an issue, it virtually impossible to have any serious national debate on any subject. Nigerians now shamelessly support or oppose government policy based on what part of the country they are from

[1] Maize - We currently produce about 11m tonnes. We need to up this to about 20m tonnes to have enough maize to feed livestock commercially

[2] Palm kernels - We are currently producing about 1.3m tonnes a year but need to increase this to at least 5m tonnes as we consume about 2m tonnes already

[3] Soyabeans - We are currently producing about 758,000 tonnes a year but need to increase this to at least South Africa’s 1.5m tonnes

[1] Six regional powers grids will be established in each geo-political zone across the country, with each responsible for providing electricity to the states within its domain

[2] A national grid will operate on top of this serving as a supplement whenever there are shortages in any geo-political zone

[3] Zonal grids will be free to sell excess power generated to other zones or export it as a commercial product
