With the plethora of socio-economic challenges we face which are certain to multiply in the future, maybe we need a brainstorming directorate called Thinking the Unthinkable

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Unlike most Nigerians, I do not believe in doing just the basic. I believe we should be looking to leapfrog the industrialised nations. We should be prepared to think the unthinkable and push the boundaries of human know-how to breaking point. Maybe a new national agency, think tank or policy unit is needed to get us thinking along such lines

As Nigeria constantly looks to expand production in a bid to reduce the scarcity of consumer goods and combat inflation, I wonder why the Northern State Governors Forum cannot come up with a regional masterplan

Ayo Akinfe

At the epicentre of this masterplan should be a programme to make Northern Nigeria the leading global producer of the following items:

[1] Millet

[2] Sorghum

[3] Groundnuts

[4] Milk

[5] Leather goods

[6] Gum Arabic

[7] Neem

[8] Shea Nuts

[9] Horses

[10] Solar Power

However we look at it, Nigeria needs to join the club of nations that enjoy annual double digit growth

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Nigeria is forecast to have a mere 2% gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate over the coming years, which is wholly inadequate

[2] Between 1999 and 2015, our average economic growth rate was about 6% per annum, although it was mainly due to high oil prices. However, in 2015, the economy just crashed

I have wracked my brain tirelessly over this and do not see any other way Nigeria can generate investment of say $25bn that matches diaspora remittances other than through religious finance

Ayo Akinfe

[1] No matter how you look at things, religious capital presents Nigeria with the biggest potential source of internal finance for investment. Even if we appoint the most brilliant economist on earth as our finance minister, he or she will never be able to crack the Nigerian economy without tapping into religious finance

With Nigeria facing the twin problems of having to create millions of jobs and needing to cut down on fuel consumption, opening the world’s largest bicycle factory is inevitable

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Nigeria was founded on the basis of the fact that she could supply Europe with commodities she needed at particular points in time. First of all it was human cargo in the form of slaves and then it later became palm oil once the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade was abolished in 1833. I ask myself why we have not continued with that trend. As the world’s largest black nation, Nigeria has got to be one of humanity’s greatest providers

As a first step towards bringing inflation down, the government has to launch a South Korean-style campaign calling on Nigerians to only consume what we produce

Ayo Akinfe

[1] In South Korea, they have a national slogan - “Anything we do not make, we do not need.” Basically, what this means is they have agreed as a people to cut their coats according to the size of their national cloth
