FORMER Kano State governor Dr Abdullahi Ganduje has been appointed as the new chairman of Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) today at a meeting of the national executive committee (NEC) in Abuja.
Over the last few weeks, controversial Dr Ganduje has emerged as the favourite to become APC chairman following the recent resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu. This is despite the fact that back in 2018, Daily Nigerian publisher Jaafar Jaafar exposed the corrupt antics of Governor Ganduje in when he published a video of him stuffing dollars into his pockets.
He showed Governor Ganduje receiving what looked like bribes from a contractor and stuffing the money into his agbada. There are, however, fears that Dr Ganduje could be facing prosecution after the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission arrested his commissioner for works and infrastructure Engineer Idris Saleh.
However, in spite of this, the APC elected him as its chairman today, with its former senate spokesman, Ajibola Basiru, named as party general secretary. Senator Basiru takes over from former Osun State deputy governor Senator Iyiola Omisore who also resigned along with Senator Abdullahi last month.
In the Daily Nigerian recording, Mr Jaafar pointed out that Dr Ganduje normally demands a 30% cut from all state contracts which contractors have to cough up in cash if they want the work. Despite all this baggage Dr Ganduje carries, the 12th APC NEC meeting currently ongoing at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, voted him in as their chairman.
Members of the committee started arriving as early as 9.30 am with the acting national chairman, Senator Abubakar Kiyari and other members of the national working committee at hand to receive delegates. Later on this afternoon, the meeting will be the addressed by President Bola Tinubu.
