SUPER Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum said he wants to continue managing the team despite the recent spats he has had with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) after the impressive showing of his wards at the Women's World Cup.
Earlier today, the falcons crashed out of the tournament in the Round of 16 after losing a penalty shoot 2-4 to England. Despite dominating play and hitting the woodwork several times, the Falcons were unable to finish off their chances, leading to a 0-0 stalemate after 120 minutes, hence having to decide the contest on penalties.
After an unbeaten run in the group stage, that involved goalless draws with Canada and Ireland and a 3-2 victory over co-hosts Australia, the Falcons put in s scintillating display today. Playing European champions England off the park, they were extremely fortunate not to have scored on at least three occasions.
Addressing a question on his future during the post-match conference, Coach Waldrum, whose contract with Nigeria expired with the team’s ouster, stated his desire to build on the success the team has achieved at the World Cup. He was also fired by the NFF just before the tournament after he publicly complained about salary arrears and bonuses owed the players.
After he gave an interview, the NFF publicly called him a loudmouth and although he was allowed to stay on, it was assumed that he would leave after the World Cup. Now, however, Mr Waldrum said he believes there have been positive signals that the NFF are open to extending his stay.
Mr Waldrum said: “It’s a great opportunity for us to build on the success and move forward. Hopefully, there’ll be an opportunity that we’re still here. From my brief conversation with the federation, even after today’s match, I think they are extremely happy with the way we’ve performed and hopefully moving forward and making this continue on.”
