FORMER Kano State governor and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the last elections Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has been suspended for six months by the board of directors for alleged anti-party activities.
In a shock development, the board also suspended the NNPP's national working committee (NWC) and several leading members of the party. It also appointed new national officers headed by Dr Agbo Major, who will serve as acting national chairman, while Ogini Olaposi will serve as the acting national secretary.
Babayo Muhammed Abdulahi, the board of trustees secretary, told newsmen at the end of a meeting in Lagos, that Senator Kwankwaso had been stripped of the NNPP national leader status by the board. He accused Senator Kwankwaso of hobnobbing with President Bola Tinubu, the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party Peter Obi, without the board’s authorisation.
He also added that Mr Aniebonam had resigned as the board of trustees chairman and a new chairman, Dr Chief Tope Aluko was elected, while High Chief Tony Obioha was elected as board spokesperson. Mr Abdulahi said the pre-election memorandum of understanding signed with the Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement and National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, had been rendered void by the actions of the NWC.
He added: “The BoT decided that material evidence in the public sector affirmed that Kwankwaso was involved in anti-party activities in various meetings, suggest political discussions with the president, Atiku and Obi without authorisation from the board. This has earned him six months suspension pending the outcome of investigation by the disciplinary committee."
