SUPER Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has officially joined the Al-Ittihad Ladies Club in the Saudi Women’s Premier League after months of speculation about where she will end up after leaving Leicester City earlier in the summer.
Plumptre, 25, one of the standout players of the recent Fifa Women's World Cup, left het club Leicester City at the end of last season under strange circumstances. Her contract had expired and rather inexplicably, no new talks were initiated or any fresh deal offered and she left the Foxes without having another club to go to.
Since the end of the World Cup, there has been a lot of speculation about Plumptre's future, with new emerging last week that she would be joining Manchester United. Plumptre who made 62 appearances during her three-year stint with Leicester City, started out as an England youth player but then switched her loyalty to Nigeria as a senior international.
Plumptre confirmed through her social media handle that she would be joining Al-Ittihad Ladies Club, whose men's team boasts of the likes of Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kanté. She is enthusiastic about her latest move and aims to contribute to Al-Ittihad’s pursuit of the Saudi Women’s Premier League trophy, which was last won by Al Nassr women.
“Grateful to have signed for Al-Ittihad. Excited to start this journey alongside some incredible human beings. My journey of self-discovery continues. It’s more than football,” Plumptre said.
