SPANISH La Liga champions Barcelona have signified an interest in signing Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi during the forthcoming January transfer window as part of a plan to shore up their squad.
Despite the demoralisation of being relegated to the English Championship with Leicester City, Ndidi has had a brilliant start to the season so far. His good form with the Foxes has captured the attention of top European clubs, including Barcelona, according to online sports portal Soccernet.ng.
Barcelona have no squad depth in the defensive midfielder position following Frenkie De Jong’s ankle injury and the club hierarchy have identified Ndidi as a player who can fill the void in the middle of the park. Other midfield options include Pedri, Gavi and Ilkay Gundogan but these players do not fit the profile of Xavi’s first-phase midfielder, leaving the club with no option but to look elsewhere.
Spanish media outlet, Sport Español, revealed that the 27-time La Liga winners are keen to have Ndidi as a squad player as they will play a lot of games and have tired legs as the season wears on. Other top clubs like Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Juventus are also interested in securing the services of Ndidi, the 52-game capped Super Eagle.
Ndidi is leading Leicester's charge for a return to the English top flight, finding the back of the net twice this season and setting up another goal from defensive midfield. Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest were also linked with a deadline-day move for Ndidi during the last transfer window but the Foxes were not willing to sell.
