I am gobsmacked that President Tinubu has not appointed a minister for animal husbandry and aquaculture with a mandate to dramatically expand production of the following animals

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Cattle

[2] Snails

[3] Pigs

[4] Poultry

[5] Mackerel

[6] Goats

[7] Turkeys

[8] Ducks

[9] Grass cutters

[10] Impala

[1] I would ringfence this sector and give it a minimum target of generating $20bn in foreign exchange earnings by 2025

[2] This ministry for animal husbandry and aquaculture would be responsible for liaising with state governors over the provision of land for all these sectors

[3] If we are serious about ending the oil dependency, this is the kind of radical action we need to take

[4] We need to set ourselves impossible targets and then make sure we achieve those targets, whatever it takes

[5] Our aim should become among the top six producers of all of these animals

[6] Just so we all realise the importance this, Nigeria is currently the sixth most populous nation in the world and by 2050 are set to become number three behind India and China

[7] It is simply logical that if we want to meet domestic demand and generate foreign exchange from exports, we have dramatically increase production

[8] Under-production is by far Nigeria’s bane. As a nation, we are not productive enough and all our other problems stem from this

[9] For me, the million naira question is who is the Nigerian best qualified for this job of minister for animal husbandry and aquaculture

[10] We need a visionary with a passion for the sector who is prepared to think the unthinkable. A modern day Alhassan Dantata. Now, that is a man after my heart, as he revolutionised groundnut production with his Kano pyramids
