PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has congratulated all three Nigerians who received awards at last night's Confederation of African Football (Caf) gala dinner in Morocco saying that they did the nation proud and are an inspiration to youngsters.
Last night, at the glitzy ceremony in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, Victor Osimhen won the African footballer of the year award, while Asisat Oshoala was named Caf’s Women’s Player of the Year for a record sixth time.
Super Falcons shot stopper Chiamaka Nnadozie, then went on to clinch her first-ever Caf Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award, in what was an all round splendid evening for Nigeria. As an icing on the cake, the Super Falcons were then voted the African female team of the year.
Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu's spokesman, issued a statement in which he said the president was very proud of all three footballers. He pointed out that President Tinubu commended the trio for their outstanding performances on national and international stages, for being sources of pride to the nation and for inspiring aspiring footballers across the continent.
His statement read: “Watching the great ambassadors of Nigeria stand atop the podium as the African Footballers of the Year, in the men and women categories, on Monday night in Marrakesh, Morocco, has strengthened our belief that with hard work, perseverance and the help of God, everything this nation needs for greatness is within us and available to us.
“I commend Victor and Asisat for not forgetting their roots and days of humble beginnings in the game they love so much and for acknowledging the role of indigenous coaches in shaping their careers. I join all Nigerian fans in praying that this well-deserved honour will begin a continued journey filled with success, triumphs, and the fulfilment of all your footballing dreams.”
