SUPER Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro is set to make several changes to today's Group A match against Guinea-Bissau in the ongoing African Cup of Nations as injuries have forced him to bring in at least three new faces and name Kenneth Omeruo as stand-in skipper.
Later this evening, the Eagles will play their final group game at the Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan but will be without captain William Ekong and leftback Zaidu Sanusi who both picked up knocks in the last match against Ivory Coast. They will also be without midfielder Alhassan Yusuf, who limped off in their first game against Equatorial Guinea
Yesterday, all three players had to train alone, ruling them out of today's match and it is believed that Coach Peseiro will now bring in defenders Bruno Onyemaechi and Kenneth Omeruo. It is also suspected that Kelechi Iheanacho may replace Samuel Chukwueze upfront alongside Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
However, the biggest concerns are with regards to skipper Ekong, who appeared to pick up a hamstring injury against Ivory Coast and there are now fears that he is in a race to be fit for the rest of the tournament. Troost-Ekong, 30, suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of the last game but his high sense of patriotism and commitment made him finish the match playing through the pain barrier.
It is expected that Ekong will continue to undergo treatment while it is hoped that the hamstring injury is not as bad as first feared, so that he can recover on time for Nigeria’s round of sixteen game. Kasimpasa of Turkey defender Omeruo, is a straightforward replacement, both as a defender and as team captain.
