NIGERIA'S sports minister John Enoh has expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the Super Eagles have played so far at the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast despite them qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.
Tomorrow, the Eagles will face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the Round of 16 in the tournament after coming second in their group picking up seven point from three games. Although the Eagles remain unbeaten and have secured two wins and a draw, their victories have not been convincing.
After a drab 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea, the Eagles then managed to secure two 1-0 wins over hosts Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau in their final two group games. Speaking to the team, Mr Enoh conveyed what he said is President Bola Tinubu’s discontent with their performance in the last group match against Guinea-Bissau.
Mr Enoh, who participated in a Zoom meeting with the coaching crew and players on Wednesday, said that the displays so far have not pleased the government. He recounted President Tinubu’s message which read: “Tell our players I wasn’t too impressed in our last match but I know that now that they are off the group stages, I know they are going to impress me more and more.”
In response, Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa assured that the team would put in the required work to secure a win tomorrow. He then asked that President Tinubu dies not to watch the game on television but attends the tournament in Ivory Coast in person.
Mr Enoh assured the players that President Tinubu would honour their wish, although it is uncertain how he will do this, given that he is currently in France. Tomorrow's game will take place at the Félix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
