HOUSE of Representatives speaker Hon Abbas Tajudeen has added his voice to the growing number of Nigerian dignitaries urging the Super Eagles to do the nation proud today against Cameroon in the ongoing African Cup of Nations.
Later on this evening, the Eagles will lock horns with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the Round of 16 of the Cup of Nations. Neither team has been at their best so far in the tournament, with Cameroon in particular, only managing to squeeze through thanks to a last ditch 3-2 victory over Gambia in their final group game.
Whoever wins today's game will be considered one of the favourites to lift the trophy, alongside Senegal and Morocco. So far, the Eagles are yet to fire on all cylinders but it is expected that with the team now entering the knockout phase of the tournament, it will eventually come into its own.
In a message to the team, Hon Abbas charged the Eagles to go for victory and bring home the coveted trophy. He added that the Super Eagles have the potential to win the African Cup of Nations considering the array of stars and experienced players in the team.
Hon Abass said football and several other sports have been a potent tool for uniting Nigerians across ethno-religious lines, adding that the citizens show more patriotism, unity and love through their passion for the national teams. He expressed his appreciation to the delegation of the House, comprising some members and several former Super Eagles players who are currently in Ivory Coast to cheer the team to victory.
Calling on Nigeria to support the team, Hon Abass urged the relevant government agencies and officials who are managing the Nigerian team to ensure that their welfare is given the utmost priority. He added that this would go a long way to motivate the members of the team to work towards lifting the trophy.
