NIGERIAN doctor and visual artist Dr Fola David has set a new world record for creating the largest painting by an individual after his drawing Unity in Diversity showcasing the diverse ethnic groups that make up the country entered the history books.
On Friday, after four days of working on the project, David surpassed the previous record of 629.98 square metres set by India’s Ravi Soni and remains resolute in achieving his ultimate goal of creating a 1000-square-metre artwork. His drawing showcases Nigeria's ethnic groups through their unique attire, languages, culture and artistic expressions.
Fola wrote on Instagram: “Congratulations to us all. On Day Four at 9 pm, we broke the current record of 629.98 square metres but we are not yet done. The goal is to get over 1000 square metres of canvas covered in drawings, we are currently at 689 square metres. Let’s Go.”
His painting site at the University of Lagos has transformed into a hub for art enthusiasts and supporters who are gathering to champion Dr David as he creates history. Notable figures include former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former world cooking record holder Hilda Bassey.
Also, Professor Olufemi Fasanmade, the dean of student affairs at the University of Lagos, and other officials visited to confer an award on Dr David. This was in recognition his contributions to the promotion of art as an alumnus of the school.
