SIX times Uefa Champions league winners Liverpool have joined the fresh race to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen during the current transfer window as a three-horse race to secure his service has developed over the last week involving Chelsea and Arsenal.
Osimhen, 25, is by far the hottest Nigerian property on the market at the moment after leading his Italian side Lazio to the league title during the 2022/23 season. A prolific striker who won the Serie A golden boot, Osimhen is a highly sought-after player but Napoli have warded off all suitors with a is €130 price tag.
Over recent weeks, there have been reports that Napoli may budge on the price though after a potential deal with French giants PSG fell through. Chelsea have been reported to be very interested in the striker over the last week, with Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal boss, also said to be looking to revive his interest in Osimhen.
Now, Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reportedly thrown his hat into the ring too and his club is said to be more financially equipped to meet Napoli’s demands. Arsenal appear to have backed out of negotiations over the substantial cost, while Chelsea are considering a loan offer with an option to buy.
Apparently, Osimhen tops Mr Slot’s transfer wish-list as Liverpool seek to strengthen their attacking options. This potential transfer would provide a significant boost to Liverpool’s frontline, especially as they prepare for life after Mohamed Salah.
Although Osimhen does not play the exact same role as Salah, his impressive goal-scoring ability makes him a valuable asset, capable of delivering the firepower Liverpool needs. Mr Slot has shown a consistent interest in Osimhen and is even willing to make space in the squad by selling Darwin Nunez.
Osimhen would solidify Liverpool’s attacking line, potentially partnering him with Cody Gakpo, who recently won the golden boot at Euro 2024 and Salah for the upcoming season. Also, the arrival of Osimhen could instantly make Liverpool the number-one challenger for Manchester City’s Premier League crown.
