SUPER Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has resigned from his position as manager of the Nigerian senior women's national team as a result of the a domestic family matter after his wife took seriously ill.
Mr Waldrum, 67, was appointed coach of the nine-time Africa champions on October 5, 2020 and has since manager to forge the team into a formidable unit. In his four years stint with the team, Mr Waldrum qualified the team to the 2023 World Cup where they reached the Round of 16 but were eliminated by eventual finalists England in a penalty shootout.
With a background in US collegiate football, Mr Waldrum managed to get the Falcons defending stoutly as a team, making them hard to beat. Yesterday, however, he tendered his letter of resignation to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), citing the ill health of his wife as the reason for stepping aside
Mr Waldrum said: “It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues and the worries that obviously come with that. After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as head coach of the Super Falcons.
“This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad." Brazil will be hosting the next Women's World Cup in 2027 and Nigeria will be expecting to qualify as one of Africa's representatives.
