Sowore released after his arrest and the seizure of his international passport in Lagos

FORMER presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has been released from custody and had his international passport returned to him after he was briefly detained at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos this morning.

Earlier on today, Mr Sowore was arrested and detained by the men of the Department of State Services (DSS) after arriving on a flight from the US. Before arriving, Mr Sowore had raised the alarm that the security services were after him, saying they had mounted a search and were looking to arrest and frame him.

Sowore had posted a message on social media saying: “Yeah! All around in my home town, they’re tryin to track me down, yeah! They say they want to bring me in guilty. However Babylon must fall! "

However, lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has confirmed that Mr Sowore has now been released with his passport returned. Mr  Adeyanju said: “Omoyele Sowore released, passport returned to him. Aluta continua.”

Confirming his release, Mr Sowore said the Nigerian Immigration Service released his passport to him. He posted a message on X saying: “I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport, released back to me. #RevolutionNow”

Mr Sowore, the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, has been campaigning for a revolution in Nigeria to end the status quo.  His campaign has brought him into constant conflict with the government, who has repeatedly detained him.
