IBADAN Grammar School Old Students Alumni Association UK chapter has won the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK (Canuk) independence day quiz for the third successive year.
At the event which held on the evening of Tuesday October 1 the Ibadan Grammar School alumni association, led by their community lead Otunba Eric Ayoola, emerged victorious by just one point. They narrowly beat the Nigerian Union of Students, led by their founding president Yemi Soile, who had to console themselves with second place, while Professionals in Accounting and Commerce came third.
Canuk social secretary, Toyin Solaru Balogun said: "It was a very entertaining evening, with the participants being very knowledgeable and passionate. From the very beginning, we saw that they were all very keen to win the contest and after a gruelling session which lasted about two hours, we had an eventual winner.
"Participants were set through their paces in five categories including, history of Nigeria, entertainment, sports, history of the UK and Canuk. This contest was done in a very sporting manner and the winner will went home with a cash prize of £50, while the first runner-up will get £30 and the second runner-up £20."
Ada Ikechiuku, Canuk's assistant secretary, who was quiz mistress on the night, added: "We would like to thank all the associations who participated in this event for sparing the time to join us. It was a very manic day with many of our members having to attend flag raising ceremonies across the country but they still found the time to log on for the quiz in the evening.
"On behalf of the Canuk executive committee, I would like to say a special thank you to the judges, on the night, especially Chris Ejeh from the Idoma Union and June Douglas from Nigerian Women in Diaspora Leadership Forum. We look forward to seeing you at our next independence day quiz in 2025."
Among those who gave goodwill messages on the night were the former Canuk chairman Dr Boma Douglas and Toyin Adepoju, the diaspora affairs manager of Providus Bank. One of Canuk's main sponsors, Providus Bank will be sponsoring the forthcoming gala dinner taking place on December 14 at Mayfair Banqueting Suite in Chadwell Heath.
