Peter Obi calls on Tinubu to hold public hearing before introducing new tax reforms

FORMER presidential candidate and Anambra State governor Peter Obi has called on the federal government to hold public hearings before enacting its proposed tax reform bills as it is important that the masses are carried along with the process.

President Bola Tinubu's government is considering introducing comprehensive tax reforms in a bid to increase revenue and to wean Nigeria off its perpetual dependency on crude oil. However, these reforms are likely to be hard-hitting as they will force many Nigerians who have never paid tax before to start paying up and will introduce several new levies.

Governor Obi, who came third in Nigeria's 2023 elections with a populist programme that appealed to the youth, has waded into the debate, saying any tax reforms need to involve the masses. He emphasised the significance of tax reform, noting that while it is a critical issue, it should be approached with transparency and public involvement.

"However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate. A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully.

“Matters of this magnitude require extensive deliberation and careful consideration and they should never be rushed. Public hearings must be conducted to allow for diverse opinions and inputs and such public hearing would also enable the broadest spectrum of public opinion to be reflected in public policy," Governor Obi said.

He added that a public hearing would foster trust and inclusivity, ensuring that policymaking reflects the needs and perspectives of all citizens. Governor Obi, however, noted the importance of balancing the government’s revenue goals with the broader implications of tax reforms.

He cautioned against focusing solely on the fiscal benefits while neglecting their impact on the nation’s overall welfare. Governor Obi urged the government to prioritise transparency, deliberation and public engagement in its decision-making process, concluding that such measures are vital for fostering a participatory democracy.

“We must also take into account the overall impact on the nation and the sustainability of all its regions. Furthermore, the government must sensitise the people and secure their buy-in for any policy changes.

"Trust and legitimacy are the foundation of effective governance, and without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail. This is how we build a truly participatory democracy,” Governor Obi added.
