Nigeria-eligible teenager defender Chigozie signs first professional contract at Luton Town

NIGERIA-eligible teenage defender Christian Chigozie has signed his first professional contract with English Championship side Luton Town following the completion of his GCSEs at the Chiltern Academy.

In a big development for the youngster, Chigozie, 17, a commanding 6 feet 2 inch centreback, now becomes an official Luton Town first team player. Born in Spain, Chigozie is eligible to represent the national teams of Spain, Nigeria through his parents, as well as England, where he has lived since the age of six.

Last season, the talented teenager etched his name into the history books as the youngest Hatter to be on the bench for a Premier League game, while still studying for his GCSEs at the Chiltern Academy. He was an unused substitute in back-to-back away games against Arsenal and Manchester City.

After gaining senior experience in pre-season friendlies, Chigozie has made the first team bench three times so far this season but has yet to make his senior debut. He joined the Hatters as an U7 in the Luton Town Community Trust's Pre-Academy programme, before signing for the main academy two years later.

An imposing, quick, and mobile centre-back, Chigozie is equally adept at operating in a back four or a back three. His aerial dominance combined with his fearless approach allows him to make vital blocks and defend the goal effectively.

Luton Town's academy manager Paul Benson said: “Christian has been in the academy since under nine and throughout the time he’s been with us, he has shown solid development year on year. A 6 ft 2in centre-back, Christian’s main strengths are his athleticism and character.

"He’s a proper defender who puts his head where it hurts and isn’t afraid to put his body on the line. A defender who loves defending and he embodies the values we look for in a Luton Town player. I’m delighted Christian has committed himself to Luton Town and I’m looking forward to seeing his journey continuing at the club.”
