ENGLISH Premier League leaders Liverpool are considering placing a £60m offer for Super Eagles striker Ademola Lookman with a view to purchasing him from Italian side Atalanta at the end of the season.
Currently, the African player of the year, Lookman has had a breathtaking last few seasons, winning the Europa League with Atalanta, where he scored a hat trick in the final. At international level too, Lookman has shone like a thousand stars as well, helping the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations final.
During that tournament, he scored three goals and put in eye-catching displays which did not go unnoticed by Europe's leading clubs. At the beginning of the current season, Chelsea have joined Manchester United and Bayern Munich in the pursuit of Lookman but Atalanta refused to sell their star player, saying they needed him as they .chased the Italian Scudetto.
Now, six-time Uefa Champions League winners Liverpool, who are looking good to win the English Premier league this season, are considering buying Lookman. This season, Lookman has scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 28 games across all competitions for Atalanta but looks set to be on his way out after falling out with manager Gian Piero Gasperini, over a penalty miss in their Uefa Champions League clash against Club Brugge.
West Ham United are also said to be keen on the Super Eagles star, with Atalanta reportedly asking for more a fee of around £60m. According to Spanish online sports outlet, Fichajes, Lookman is on Liverpool’s radar should Colombian striker Luis Diaz leave Anfield in the summer.
Diaz is apparently unhappy at being played out on the left flank at Liverpool due to the fact that he has to compete with the likes of Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Darwin Núñez for starting spots down the middle. As a result, the club’s sporting management are exploring options in the market and Lookman is a strong candidate.
Lookman fits the profile they’re looking for as he is a technically gifted quick winger who is skilful and can take on defenders. Additionally, Lookman’s experience in the English Premier League is considered as a plus by the Liverpool hierarchy but ultimately, any move is predicated on the exit of Luis Diaz.
