Liverpool look to sign Lookman at the end of the season as a replacement for Mo Salah

ENGLISH footballing giant Liverpool are now poised to sign Super Eagles striker Ademola Lookman at the end of the season as a replacement for Egyptian legend Mo Salah who looks set to leave Merseyside in the summer.

Currently at the top of the table and all set to lift another league title at the end of the season, Liverpool see Lookman as the ideal replacement for Salah. Since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2016, Salah, 32, has been phenomenal for the Reds, scoring 241 goals and providing 109 assists in 387 appearances.

He is now the club’s third highest goalscorer ever after Ian Rush and Roger Hunt and has been integral to everything that Liverpool have achieved over the last nine years. However, Salah has not signed a contract extension as his current deal expires at the end of the season, prompting Liverpool to begin the search for a replacement.

Salah has often indicated his readiness to stay on Merseyside but it appears Liverpool are unwilling to meet his contractual demands. According to Transfer News Live, Lookman, 27, is a top target for Liverpool.

Lookman, who currently plays for Atalanta in Italy,  has been in great form since he joined the club three years ago. He has contributed 49 goals and 22 assists in 107 appearances for Atalanta but recently, he had a fallout with La Dea boss Gian Pero Gasperini after the latter called him the worst penalty taker he had ever seen.

Atalanta would be desperate to sell Lookman if he refuses to sign a new contract and aside from Liverpool, other top teams like Manchester United and Arsenal are monitoring his situation. Lookman started his career in England and if he will move on from Atalanta, it will likely be to a Premier League club.

Currently, the African player of the year, Lookman has had a breathtaking last few seasons, winning the Europa League with Atalanta, where he scored a hat trick in the final. At international level too, Lookman has shone like a thousand stars as well, helping the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations final.
