PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has once again left Nigeria for a two week European vacation prompting speculation that he has gone to France for another medical check-up with his doctors for an undisclosed ailment.
Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu has travelled to France regularly where he has a home. It is believed that he also visits his medical doctors in the capital Paris and also uses the opportunity to check in on his friend President Emmanuel Macron, who he enjoys a good relationship with.
Today, the presidency announced that President Tinubu is leaving Nigeria again for Paris, on a short working visit. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, said that during the visit, President Tinubu will appraise his administration’s mid-term performance and assess key milestones.
According to Mr Onanuga, the president will also use the retreat to review the progress of ongoing reforms and engage in strategic planning ahead of his administration’s second anniversary. He pointed out, however, that the president will be in touch with his ministers throughout the fortnight that he is away.
Mr Onanuga said: “This period of reflection will inform plans to deepen ongoing reforms and accelerate national development priorities in the coming year. While away, President Tinubu will remain fully engaged with his team and continue to oversee governance activities."
Historically, Nigerian presidents have found it easier to carry out assignments like cabinet reshuffles and major appointments abroad, where they are free from the activities of lobbyists. It is not clear if President Tinubu is planning to make any major appointments while in Europe.
Also, it is not yet clear if President Tinubu will be visiting his doctors while in France. In the past, President Tinubu has been pictured visiting doctors in France and the UK, sparking rumours that he has major health concerns.
