ENGLISH Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspurs have stepped up plans to sign Nigerian striker Victor Boniface from German side Bayer Leverkusen during the forthcoming summer transfer window.
In his first season in the German Die Bundesliga, Boniface, 24, scored 21 goals and provided nine assists in 34 games, allowing Leverkusen to win the Bundesliga title and the DFB cup. However, with it looking like he will now leave Germany at the end of the current season, two times-English champions Spurs are keen on signing the striker.
Ange Postecoglou’s side are not short of attacking options as they have Son Heung-Min, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Richarlison, Timo Werner, Dominic Solanke and Mathys Tel. However, the Spurs are currently 16th on the English Premier League table in what has been a dreadful season, even by their own standards.
Spurs' only chance of salvaging anything this season is in the Uefa Europa League, where they take on Boniface’s former side, Bodo in the semi-final. Spurs are aware of Boniface’s willingness to exit the Bay Arena after he was on their shortlist about a year ago and is believed that he will be willing to walk the moment Xabi Alonso leaves Leverkusen.
However, Spurs, the eight-time English FA Cup winners face stiff competition as West Ham are also monitoring the services of the 24-year-old striker. Spurs have barely had any success in nearly two decades of top-flight football, with their last trophy coming in the 2007/2008 season when they won the Carabao Cup.
Boniface will likely relish the opportunity to play in the English Premier League as he is entering the peak years of his career. However, there are fears that he will only be at the London Stadium to provide competition for Dominic Solanke, not to become an outright starter.
