ENGLISH Premier League giants Everton have stepped up their pursuit of Super Eagles winger Moses Simon with a view to signing him during the forthcoming summer transfer window that commences.
Currently plying his trade with French side Nantes, Simon has been on the radar of several English clubs for a while now. Way back in 2020, Newcastle had planned a €17m bid for Simon but the deal failed to materialise that year and in 2023, the club made enquiries about the winger but Nantes refused to entertain any bids for him.
Liverpool were also said to be a big fan of Simon and at one stage, there was said to be a three-way bidding war for the winger between Newcastle, Leeds and Liverpool. Simon, 29, is enjoying his best season in the French top-flight, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists, beating the record of his debut campaign with the Yellow Canaries.
His brilliant displays have caught the eye of Everton manager David Moyes, who is hoping to bring him to England. However, former Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, has urged Simon to remain in France rather than move to England.
Mr Rohr said: “Moses Simon would thrive in France. He’s a very pleasant player to coach, who poses no problems. He’s hardworking and a good listener. When he arrives at a club, he puts himself at the service of the team because his statistics prove that he’s a footballer who knows how to score and make others score.”
“He’s invaluable to his team’s offensive performance. His winger position won’t make him a player who can score 20 or 25 goals per season but he’s invaluable to his team’s offensive performance.”
Simon has etched his name into Nantes’ history books by becoming the club’s all time leading assist provider, with a total tally of 42. In doing so he broke the record set by the late Argentine striker Emiliano Sala, who died in a tragic air crash en route to signing for Cardiff City in 2019.
