Serie A sides eye Nigeria-eligible former Chelsea academy graduate Faustino Anjorin

FORMER Chelsea academy graduate and Nigeria-eligible midfielder Faustino Anjorin could be set to join the big league soon as several big Italian sides are eyeing him with the view to making a summer purchase when the transfer window opens.

Anjorin, 22, who was once a Chelsea academy trainee, now plies his trade with Empoli in Italy's Serie A, where he is flourishing. He is now attracting the attention of some of Serie A’s most ambitious sides, with Atalanta, Bologna and Torino locked in a three-way race for his signature. Atalanta are said to be leading the chase and Empoli, whose Serie A status remains in doubt heading into the final rounds, could be forced into a sale.

Once tipped for stardom at Stamford Bridge, Anjorin saw his star dim as injuries and unremarkable loan spells in England stalled his progress. A free transfer to Empoli last summer appeared to be a fresh start and the move has paid off as under the guidance of Roberto Gemmi, Anjorin has steadily found his rhythm and become a standout performer in Serie A.

Known for nurturing raw talent, the Bergamo club see Anjorin as a perfect fit for Gian Piero Gasperini’s high-energy, technically fluid system, as with his dynamism, vision and technical flair, the midfielder ticks all the boxes.

Although Anjorin is under contract until 2027, Chelsea retain a 50% sell-on clause, which lowers the financial risk for buyers, while complicating the Tuscans’ hopes of cashing in. Bologna, with European football within reach, could offer Anjorin a platform in the Europa League, while Torino see him as a building block for the future but Atalanta’s Champions League credentials may prove decisive.

Adding further intrigue is Anjorin’s international future. A former England youth international, who qualifies for Nigeria through his heritage, is apparently on the radar of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle.

Coach Chelle has been tracking Anjorin’s resurgence since his return from injury and is considering him for the upcoming Unity Cup in London, as well as Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. In what looks like an interesting few weeks ahead for him, Anjorin could be set for a summer of transfer drama and potential international recognition.
